Aulla is located in the river plain of the Magras, at the confluence of the Aulella and the Tavarone.

The Fortezza Brunella is particularly worth seeing. The fortress was built by Giovanni delle Bande Nere in the 16th century. The Spaniards managed only once to conquer it.

Today the Lunigiana natural history museum is located inside the fortress. In addition, there is a beautiful botanical garden around the fortress.
